Neighbor Issues

Complaint: My Neighbor's tree shades my lawn

St. Augustine grass requires a lot of sun, water, fertilizer, pesticides, mowing....  Some municipalities consider grass clipping to be toxic waste and won't accept them in yard waste pickup.  Two cycle engines on lawn mowers give off more harmful emissions than your car ! Trees are good for the environment, grass is not.  Have an area where grass won't grow due to shade ?  Consider planting ferns, a flowering shade garden, or a native drought tolerant ground cover.

Complaint: My Neighbor does something I don't like

If whatever your neighbor is doing is not against the law, then there is not really anything that can be done.  Consider being nice and asking them to limit this activity to some time when it will cause you the least distress.  Compromise can be a beautiful thing.

Complaint:  The house next door is rented by the room

This is a problem, unfortunately it is not illegal to rent a house by the room. The failure of the land lord to screen theses kinds of renters can bring a criminal element into an otherwise quiet, single family subdivision.   See the article written my Marlene Sokol about  this type of rental, that is very close to home.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE

PLEASE get to know you neighbors.  Become familiar with faces that belong in Beacon Meadows. Be aware of 'strangers' in the neighborhood.  Especially those that are trying to look 'casual' or are checking out houses too thoroughly.  If you are home during the day, and see suspicious activity, call 911.  Report any suspicious activity to the Sheriff's office - they have been quick to respond !

If You See Something Suspicious. . .

  • Write down the description of the suspicious person(s).  Get the make model, color and license number of strange vehicles.  Call the Sheriff's Office and other members of your community.
  • You should never attempt to apprehend a suspect.  This is the Law Enforcement Officer's Job.

Take measures to make the back of your house less accessible. Lock  windows and gates. Deadbolt doors.  Consider putting some of your storm shutters over windows in the back of your house.

If you'd like to be alerted to breaking news in the neighborhood - use the 'Contact US' form of the web site to register your email address with us (just send the form, or send an email to beaconmeadows@gmail.com, and you'll be added to the list).  If you have breaking news about the neighborhood, email to the webmaster (Barb) at beaconmeadows@gmail.com, for distribution.

BTW - 'Police' operate in incorporated cities like Tampa.    We live in unincorporated Hillsborough County, so we call the Sheriff, not the Police.

Thank you Dan Jones for agreeing to be on the board !  However we have another member who will be unable to attend meetings due to a change in work schedule, and another member who would like to resign because of health issues - so we are still in need of new faces on the board !!

Be involved with your neighborhood !  The Board of Trustees need some new faces. The county requires the board have a quorum of 5 of the possible 7 members to conduct business.

Things will get much worse in Beacon Meadows if the board can not operate due to lack of Trustees.

The ONLY requirement to be on the Board is that you are a registered voter at a Beacon Meadows address.  It helps that you care about your neighborhood, and can spare one hour a month.

The board meets at 7:00pm, the second Thursday of each month at the Carrollwood Cultural Center. Meetings last approximately one hour.  Come to a meeting !

Wouldn't you rather have a neighbor work on your project or repair, rather than some stranger from the phone book ?  I would !

PARKING
 - Don't park on the grass.  It ruins the look of the yard, and it's a deed restriction violation.
 - Don't park near stop signs.  It's dangerous and illegal.
 - Don't park near a mailbox.  It's hazardous for postal carriers.
 - Don't park overnight in front of someone elses house, without their permission.  It's just rude and it makes it seem like you are hiding from someone.
 - Try to not park on the street at all on trash collection days. (Tuesday and Friday) .  Give the collection trucks a break !

Trees are Our Friends!
Trees are precious natural resources. Not only do they beautify our neighborhood, but they provide sorely needed shade in the hot Florida sun. Trees have also been found to play an important role in producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as moderating ground temperatures.
It is important for homeowners to be aware that Hillsborough County has restrictions on certain removal and trimming of trees on residential property and property that is in County right-of-ways, such as along the street side of sidewalks in residential areas. Stiff fines can be levied in some circumstances if permits or permission are not requested in advance.
For information or to report suspected unauthorized removal or trimming of trees in the community, call or e-mail (by clicking on the name) one of the following staff representatives in the County Planning & Growth Management Natural Resources Dept. at 272-5920.

Did you know ?

Hillsborough county requires a building permit for all storage sheds.  This is to ensure it meets building codes and is properly anchored to survive our often rough and windy weather.

Also remember permanent structures can not be within the easement that many of us have along the back of our properties, or too close to the property line.

If you are trying to sell your house - PLEASE do not sell it to someone who will rent it out by the room.  This is becoming a major Safety & Security issue in the subdivision, and through-out the county.
